2 of them are different. Maltese like sweet and dainty. Westie like larger more stout and more active. Westie is a terrier so have that terrier character.

The puppies are also quite different....you may want to drop by www.akc.org to check it out.

the tails r different, the maltese has a longer furrier tail but the westie has a short tail..coat texture as well..the maltese coat is silky long straight but the westie is a harsh type of coat with a furry undercoat. the eye shape is also different, the maltese has small round eyes but the westie has almond shape eyes. the expression is also different, the maltese gives a sweet look but the westie's expression is suppose to be a more alert and game for it look..sigh..hope i m rite..

The length of the muzzle differs as well. The westie has a slightly longer muzzle then a maltese. The westie's original coat (without stripping), is curly. The maltese's coat is straighter and a lot softer, thus making it easier to matt. Maltese puppies also look more like little powderpuffs than westie puppies. Usually westie puppies have their tails docked, but maltese puppies have their tails on. :) Hope this helps.

2) The Westie appeared on a brand of Can food.. cant remember the name... BLEH... :headscrat
3) People like to decorate their Maltese with things like ribbons and stuff.. So much so that you could almost replace your Christmas Tree with a Maltese this year liao. Imagine A Maltese running around with lights blinking and huge lollipops dangling.. Haha.. :xmas:
4) You would spend more time digging out lost pens, your winning 4D ticket as well as your dead hamster who had suffocated while being trapped in your Maltese's long fur? :dead:

Hehe.. just trying my luck.. (^^,)

well... any particular objective in asking the diff? Basically the westie and the maltese is two different breed from two different background. One belongs to the toy group while the other the terrier group.

Standards for Maltese:
Size: Small
Category: under Toy dog
Grooming: Considerable if kept at show standard
Exercise: Little
LifeSpan: ard 9 - 15 yrs
Official Standards:

General Appearance
Smart, white-coated dog, with proud head carriage.

Characteristics
Lively, intelligent, alert.

Temperament
Sweet-tempered.

Head and Skull
From stop to centre of skull (centre between forepart of ears) and stop to tip of nose, equally balanced. Stop well defined. Nose black. Muzzle broad, well filled under eye. Not snipey.

Eyes
Oval, not bulging, dark brown, black eye rims, with dark haloes.

Ears
Long, well feathered, hanging close to head; hair to mingle with coat at shoulders.

Mouth
Jaws strong, with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Teeth even.

Neck
Medium length.

Forequarters
Legs short and straight. Shoulders well sloped.

Body
Well balanced, essentially short and cobby. Good spring of rib, back level from withers to tail.

Hindquarters
Legs short, well angulated.

Feet
Round, pads black.

Tail
Feathered, carried well arched over back.

Gait/Movement
Straight and free-flowing, without weaving. Viewed from behind, legs should neither be too close nor too wide apart.

Coat
Good length, not impeding action, straight, of silky texture, never woolly. Never crimped and without woolly undercoat.

Colour
Pure white, but slight lemon markings permissible.

Size
Height not exceeding 25 cms (10 ins) from ground to withers.

Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Standards for Westie:
Size: Small
Category: Under Terrier
Grooming: Considerable cos u need to hand pull out some dead fur to keep it nice
Exercise: Moderate
Lifespand: Same 9-15 yrs

Show Standards:

General Appearance
Strongly built; deep in chest and back ribs; level back and powerful quarters on muscular legs and exhibiting in a marked degree a great combination of strength and activity.

Characteristics
Small, active, game, hardy, possessed of no small amount of self-esteem with a varminty appearance.

Temperament
Alert, gay, courageous, self-reliant but friendly.

Head and Skull
Skull slightly domed; when handled across forehead presents a smooth contour. Tapering very slightly from skull at level of ears to eyes. Distance from occiput to eyes slightly greater than length of foreface. Head thickly coated with hair, and carried at right angle or less, to axis of neck. Head not to be carried in extended position. Foreface gradually tapering from eye to muzzle. Distinct stop formed by heavy, bony ridges immediately above and slightly overhanging eye, and slight indentation between eyes. Foreface not dished nor falling away quickly below eyes, where it is well made up. Jaws strong and level. Nose black and fairly large, forming smooth contour with rest of muzzle. Nose not projecting forward.

Eyes
Set wide apart, medium in size, not full, as dark as possible. Slightly sunk in head, sharp and intelligent, which, looking from under heavy eyebrows, impart a piercing look. Light coloured eyes highly undesirable.

Ears
Small, erect and carried firmly, terminating in sharp point, set neither too wide nor too close. Hair short and smooth (velvety), should not be cut. Free from any fringe at top. Round-pointed, broad, large or thick ears or too heavily coated with hair most undesirable.

Mouth
As broad between canine teeth as is consistent with varminty expression required. Teeth large for large size of dog, with regular scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws.

Neck
Sufficiently long to allow proper set on of head required, muscular and gradually thickening towards base allowing neck to merge into nicely sloping shoulders.

Forequarters
Shoulders sloping backwards. Shoulder blades broad and lying close to chest wall. Shoulder joint placed forward, elbows well in, allowing foreleg to move freely, parallel to axis of body. Forelegs short and muscular, straight and thickly covered with short, hard hair.

Body
Compact. Back level, loins broad and strong. Chest deep and ribs well arched in upper half presenting a flattish side appearance. Back ribs of considerable depth and distance from last rib of quarters as short as compatible with free movement of body.

Hindquarters
Strong, muscular and wide across top. Legs short, muscular and sinewy. Thighs very muscular and not too wide apart. Hocks bent and well set in under body so as to be fairly close to each other when standing or moving.

Hindquarters
Straight or weak hocks most undesirable.

Feet
Forefeet larger than hind, round, proportionate in size, strong, thickly padded and covered with short harsh hair. Hindfeet are smaller and thickly padded. Under surface of pads and all nails preferably black.

Tail
13-15 cms (5-6 ins) long, covered with harsh hair, no feathering, as straight as possible, carried jauntily, not gay or carried over back. A long tail undesirable, and on no account should tails be docked.

Gait/Movement
Free, straight and easy all round. In front, legs freely extended forward from shoulder. Hind movement free, strong and close. Stifle and hocks well flexed and hocks drawn under body giving drive. Stiff, stilted movement behind and cowhocks highly undesirable.

Coat
Double coated. Outer coat consists of harsh hair, about 5 cms (2 ins) long, free from any curl. Undercoat, which resembles fur, short, soft and close. Open coats most undesirable.

Colour
White.

Size
Height at withers approximately 28 cms (11 ins).

Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Ha ha ha... Nah...its from the Kennel Club. SKC Follows the guideline of the Kennel Club UK. Basically the above summarizes the differences... their temperament is the most diff... but pls dun think cos a maltese is a tiny dog... they are very kuai! NOT...they are little imps... very playful dogs they are...thou their size is so small but they are really bold and without fear :D
