hi, i would like to ask u guys to share ur experiences and tips on sturgeon care.
i have bought them a few times but they always seem to die after awhile. the longest suriving pair lasted 5 months before dying too.
its frustrating. i refuse to buy anymore since they keep dying or at leaast, until i can get advice from someone who has kept them and they live for a long time witht that person as well.
can u tell me wat u feed them? wat tank set up u have? wat other fishes u keep with them? the water temp? the water salinity? the ph?
thanks

the main diet of sturgeons are blood worms and LFS usually feed them that...sturgeons have a weird habit of once accustoming to one type of food, they will eat that food and only that food.
sturgeons are also fresh water fishes and live under acidic conditions however they are coldwater fish....
so it seems the main cause of death for your sturgeons is water temp.

WOW First paddle fish now sturgeons !!!. Are u in singapore ??
My fren the people who have harvested them used 20 foot tanks. Well if u have one like that I would really wanna see this. How big is ur tank ? I think this development of this fish also require very low temperatures.
May I ask where did u get these paddles and sturgeons ?

paddlefishes are very rare in singapore and i havent seen one so i really dont know about them....but sturgeons are very very common...they are sold as young sturgeons in fish shop....they are black and look like armoured fishes and a little like sharks
btw...isnt this site for singaporeans????

yeah, its prolly my water temp. guess i gotta get fans.
pisces.
i first saw paddlefish for sale in sg a year and a half ago. and it cost 70 bucks per fish then.
i then saw it a year back at 50 bucks a fish.
i recently saw it at 18-25 bucks a fish. depending on size. paddlefish are almost never found in LFS. it depends on your luck. i make trips to LFS all over the island almost every other month and visit LFS in the east and north every other week. hence, i am quite known to them and they call me when they have interesting stuff.
but i digress, this is about sturgeons.
sturgeons are also very rarely seen in LFS, but not as rare as paddlefish.
there are 2 kinds of sturgeons in sg. one is plain dark grey/blue. the other is the same but they have two thin white stripes down their back. very much prettier. but more ex too.
they look like armored miniature sharks.
decentkid: can u pm me wat u have on sturgeons?
water temp
diet
ph
salinity
thanks.

This was a question jokingly asked coz paddle fish and sturgeons are generally raised in Eastern European and colder countries are are hard to find in the tropics. maybe my information source was understated since this is so easily avaiable in Singapore.
Nick,
The type of water can range from
sub-topical fresh,sea water,brackish waters.
A ph or around 7.5 should be ok.Temp should be around 10-18 degrees(now thats hard in Singapore). For most of these types of fish international trade is restricted more over they come in the endangered and vulnerable categories. I am not really into marine fish so far but I do read some stuff ..so I know. Are you able to distinguish the sturgeon to a sub species level. I might be able to give more detailed information then. U may put a pic on site.....Nick It woule be great if you can regularly post some information on both these fish. Would be a delightful experience to know their development.

i do not have a pic of a sturgeon sold in LFS at the moment. coz like i said, they keep dying after a few months. and i am not one of those people who simple replace fishes when they die indefinately.
but i will borrow a webcam to show u a pic of my paddlefish. hope you can help me with that.
thanks a million

no. they are not aropiana.
paddle fish is in the gallery. i believe i posted pics there.
sturgeons and paddle fish can live in temperatures from 16-24 deg C
with 18-22 being the optimum temp.
my fan can only chill till 25 deg max.
so yesh, when i do get them again, i will get a chiller.
but i will ony bring the temp down to 22 or 23.

I tried sturgeon a couple of times but given up. I understand the main difficulty is they require high oxygen in the water, so I read somewhere need to lower the temperature, and/or increase water flow in the tank.
Other than adding a chiller, anyone tried running an air pump from the freezer? Don't blame me if anything explode!
